I had Mirena put in after my son was born almost 10 years ago. For the fomirst 6 months I had heavy bleeding, but I stuck it out. Now I don't have periods. Just some cramping every now and again. Mostly after vigorous sex. In May I go to get it replaced again for the next 5 years. I've heard a lot of pros and cons. Everyone's body is different. Luckily mine adapted well.

I had mirena put in about a month ago. The first week was pretty bad, and I would recommend having it put in over a break... Instead I had it put in before my week of finals and it was extremely hard to concentrate with the bad cramps that came with it. Ever since then it has progressively gotten better, but I've noticed that cramps usually return when exercising, which is extremely inconvenient considering I'm trying to get back in shape. Another thing is the cramps come completely unexpected, when they do. My doctor recommended Tylenol and it does help. Expect the week of your period to be the most painful- i was used to 4-day periods with little to no cramping and now I have 7-day periods with 4-6 hours of terrible cramping. All in all, you gotta take one for the team- the pain is worth it.

I got Mirena inserted this past month. No pain during insertion, just mild discomfort which was like 5 seconds. So,e cramping that felt like period cramping after and very light spotting for 48 hours. Took Advil which helped with cramps.

First period very light and no cramping so far.
I did feel like a hoRonald basket case though and got a bunch of zits on my face (which I never do on my period)

I don't have Mirena, but Skyla. The insertion was painful and I was pretty much down for the count that day. After that I had cramps for a couple of days (but they did respond to ibuprofen) and spotting for 30 days.

That was 7 months ago. Since then I've had my period regularly with some minor cramping. Periods are much lighter but they last longer than they used to (7 days instead of 5). I get a bit of back pain and sometimes spotting around ovulation and I've also noticed a dip in my mood from that time until my period starts.

Overall though, I'd say I'm very pleased with it.

I've had mirena for 6 months now. I'm 25 and never had a baby. My dr. Still recommended it over other iuds. The insertion was so bad I could not even sit down or walk. That pain subsided after about a week. Now, 6 months later, I still have regular periods... if not worse than before. The cramping starts a 3 days before my period does. And it's not just a slight back ache. It's full on severe pain that doubles me over. I can't be without my heating pad and ibuprofen does minimal. It's even happened while my husband and I were at dinner and I was in so much pain I couldn't even eat. Plus I have the worst mood swings. Some days I just cry for no reason or am extremely angry over very small things. Been taking lorazapam to help with those...but don't want to keep taking them. I plan to consult with my Dr soon to see if this is normal. I can't remember to take a pill everyday and I was on nuva ring for 2 years before... nuva ring was really nice. No period (if you leave it in through your period) and hardly any cramping. Only reason i switched was because it gets in the way during sex and became a nuisance to take in and out before sex. I also wanted something more long term. But...may switch back soon...just hope the removal is not as bad as insertion. Hope this helps women decide if mirena is for them.

I had my mirena insterted in about 2 weeks, i started my period and it seems to last forever, very heavy bleeding. My normal periods usually only last 5 days this has been going on for about 8 days and heavy bleeding still. My cramps are very bad. I am not sure if it is due to still bleeding or the mirena. I am now dehydrated and lightheadedness is occuring off and on.

If your thinking of getting the Mirena I hope you have benefits because where I am in Canada, it costs 400$. I can imagine it's probably more expensive other places. It's a rather serious topic you should really talk to your doctor about. Nobody should have to waste 400$ on a birth control method that wouldn't work out. I find it's extremely U satisfying for young woman who have not had children.

I've had my Mirena IUD in for 7 months now and even to this day I have never felt such agonizing painful cramping in my life. I cannot wait to have it removed to feel instant relief.

I was told that most symptoms get better with time so I would probably give it a few more months. I got pregnant on the pill - taking it 100 percent correctly, every day, same time etc. (and I'm not overweight which I know can be a factor in pill failure) so NEVER going back to that again. Mirena is more effective than tubal ligation as well - I'm a fan.

The first time I got the Mirena placed was right after having my son. That was eight years ago. I remember having cramps after placement but other than that I loved it! Absolutely no problems. My periods were lighter. No cramping. It was amazing. Since it worked so well for me I decided to get it replaced and this time it's a living hell. The cramps are so bad! I've only had it in place for a week in a half and I already want it out! They really feel like contractions. I'm on my period so once I'm done with my period and the cramps are still happening I'm definitely getting it removed. I don't think this is normal.

I just had Mirena, having issues, almost 50, but not. In menopause, and don't want to get pregnant, I keep missing the pill. But I had 5 kids, and this has been feeling like labor cramps, mostly in my legs, it gets so severe, I am bent over, I hope it improves, and I am worried about having sex with my partner, if it's going to hurt. I was excited to get one, due to severe heavy periods, but ,I tell you it was barbaric, nothing for pain, and I can't sleep. I am willing to be patient, IO think it will be with all the pain.

I've had my IUD for about 2 1/2 years. My periods completely stopped once I had it inserted which has been great. I had really bad cramps for about 3 weeks right after I got it put in. Other than that I have been pain free up until a couple of months ago. Now I experience severe cramps off and on and occasional spotting. I'll usually experience cramps for a day or two and then they will go away for a couple of weeks and then come back. I've also noticed a lot of the time I get cramps the day after I have sex, so I don't know if that has anything to do with it? They are definitely the worst cramps I've ever had and I'm starting to get sick of it. I have an appointment scheduled in two weeks to have it removed but I'm going to the doctor tomorrow to get things checked out. I've read similar stories and possible causes seem to be either ovarian cysts, uterine infection, or the IUD has embedded in the uterine wall. So I'm starting to freak out and can only think of the worst case scenario

someone help, I'm 17 years old I've had unregulated and extremely heavy periods since I've been 12, I would have my period for up to 10 weeks, and then not get them for about two months. I lost a lot of blood and had to be put into hospital to get a blood transfusion, I'm also anemic. I got the marina fitted and it was the worst pain I've ever felt, I also got put onto the pill and got told to stay on it for 6 months to regulate it. But I've only had the marina about a month and I'm bleeding rather heavily and have the worst cramps ever, why is this?! someone please help I can't deal wth this any longer

I have had my mirena in for 3 weeks now as a remedy for my heavy periods but the IUD has turned out to be so much worse than before! Pre IUD I would have heavy bleeding and cramps for about 1 week. Now after I had the IUD put in I have spotting/bleeding almost every single day, extreme moodiness, and the worst cramps of my life! I hurt and feel nauseous all the time! I'm going to get it taken out next week. After I eat, it seems to cause severe inflammation and even worse cramping, it takes my breath away. My friend warned me not to get it, I should have listened!
