They are towns people like tha happen to have a college (or 2-4 colleges) nearby.

College Station, Texas
Now that’s a college town.

Agree.

A college town is a place where ther identity of the town is centered on the university.

a.k.a. middle of nowhere

Chapel Hill, Charlottesville, Athens GA are middle of nowhere? These are high culture towns with proximity to major cities.

I thought Charlottesville was in the middle of nowhere. Not much around

well i live there and you could not be more wrong. Google what to do in Charlottesville. Start with the art scene, vineyards, Montecello, Poplar Forest, tour UVA itself, a world UNESCO site, walk the old mall for a fun stroll and great food. For fantastic french food try Fleurie on the mall. Great seafood and BBQ places. Antiquing. Driving. fabullous golfing. horseback riding. canoeing. hot air balloons. great old book stores. hiking. gorgeous countryside....

I guess people are going to get upset that you are naming a city, too. But we took a side trip from Franklin the 2 times we were in MA for orientation and drop off this summer to look around Providence. Seems like a nice smaller city. The area around Brown is lovely. And there are quite a few colleges downtown and on the outskirts.

I am just sad that there isn't an easy public transit connection between Franklin and Providence - it is closer than Boston ;P

Uh, it’s Charleston, SC. Literally the name of the school! Great town with a lot to offer.

Great city, not at all a college town. Boston also isn’t a college town. Folks need to stop listing cities they like that just happen to have a college.

Meh. Boston is pretty much a big college town.

NP.

A city with professional sports is the opposite of a college town. College towns revolve around college sports.

You don’t have to like college towns but a centered college identity is the generally understood definition. You don’t get to redefine Chicago or Pittsburgh as college towns.
