Show me where he said “normal”

He confessed.
"While I am steadfast that our results, data and findings are sound, I acknowledge recurrent language in the introductory sections.”
He copied a few pages of background material.
Does that change the core of the paper? No.
Was it a cowardly and dishonest way to fill space and set the context of the paper? Yes.
Is it claiming credit for someone else's expository work? Yes.
What message does this send to UMD students? If he plagiarized and apologized, and still retains his position, that's a terrible message to the students. He needs to step down.
-parent of UMD student.
I seriously hope that if an engineering student invented something amazing and when writing the results copied and pasted the introduction we would care more about the invention.
Then why does umd and every other university have a na academic dishonesty code of conduct, where plagiarism can result in expulsion.
Kind of hypocritical of umd to expel students for plagiarizing now.
I agree it’s a ridiculous, old, and unrealistic rule, not to mention it’s impossible to police. Just mark them down if you catch it and move on.
Maybe for journalism majors but otherwise let’s stress content,
So, how will Pines be "marked down" for this? Leave without pay for a month or two?
Idk how are Wall Street thugs handled when they steal $1B … fine them $100K.
No good research paper doesn’t have an editor. You think when you read a paper, a book, a new paper article it’s the authors authentic work.
Ffs do you people have jobs.
Oh, ffs, why do you think plagiarism is considered a serious academic breach, enough to get a student kicked out.
1500 words were copied verbatim.
The president of UMD should be held to the same academic standards as the students, if not more so.
PS If you want the $1b WS thugs to pay more for their crimes, please contact your congress rep.

So you are saying it is OK to be dishonest to get ahead as long as you belong to an appressed group. That certainly smacks of racism.
He is. But as far as I can tell, plagiarism isn’t particular to any political party, race, or sexual orientation. Nor should we let people off the hook just because we agree with their politics. I’m sure there are plenty of other people who could fill the void at UMD.Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:Anonymous wrote:The source is lame, OP.
I see you left out the conservative aspect of the accusing publication in your original post.
“An article published Tuesday in The Daily Wire, a conservative American media outlet, asserted Pines lifted portions of the papers from a website published in 1996.”
Why would an American conservative publication care about the UMD president? Hmmm…
So let me flip this for you...if a liberal organization outs a conservative for obvious dishonesty or some other misdeed, then it's okay for other conservatives to ignore the facts presented? I really do not like where I see our society going.
Is the UMD prez a liberal? He might be - I don’t know.

Melania Trump plagiarized Michelle Obama. Nothing happened. She became FLOTUS.
Did The Daily Wire take Melania Trump to task?

The degree of intentional copying is, unlike some recent high profile cases, NOT minor and cannot be chalked up to an unintentional mistake due to carelesses. He (and his coauthor) copied nearly a 1/3 of his 5000 word academic paper from an Australian student's website in 2002 with no credit to the real author. He only changed the spelling from Australian convention to American spelling. If you look at side by side comparisons, there can be no doubt about plagiarism. Clearly unethical, clearly cheating. Any undergrad student, or even high school student, should know better. He should acknowledge he made a serious error of judgment and step down immediately, and the university needs to stop defending him.

Are you ready to learn the dark secret of academia?
Most published research is irrelevant or nonsense, not amazing inventions. If you have an amazing invention, you don't nees to publish a peer-reviewed paper about it.
But if someone is willing to lie about something small instead of taking a stand and saying they'd rather give credit where due or not publish in a format they don't like, what else are rhet willing to lie about?
Pines also recently put out fake "scholarship" about rhe Palestinian flag, probably copied from ChatGPT but definitely not citing sources in any way.
