Not perfect, but made my peace with this a long ago. We were at a college prep meeting at school last night, and the guidance counselors were basically saying to the kids, don't try to play games, be honest about your background. (And following SC decision not sure why this matters anyway?) A mom friend of mine, whose family is from Guyana, going back generations, and mostly of Indian origin said to me, "Ok yeah, honestly what does my kid put?" (Dad is same as mom.) I asked her what she puts on medical forms and she said she just doesn't answer it. Is Asian right? The family visits Guyana every year, is proud of their heritage, they're Hindu (actually she is, her husband's fam is Christian and Muslim), they eat roti everyday lol, etc. She feels like Asian would be wrong or maybe even misleading. They're certainly not Hispanic.

First kids for both of us so we also don't know what the options are. Thanks for any insight.

The guidance counselor was completely unaware that college admissions officers DO NOT see the race and ethnicity boxes from the Common App? Out of touch, out to lunch, whatever you want to call it, they don't know what they are talking about.

What you choose has zero effect on admission.

You’d talk about it in your community or diversity supplement.

Hello?!?!

Essays are not what OP is asking about. OP is asking about the boxes.

Maybe if Guyana were not a country in South America this would make sense. It's not in the Cariibbean.

It's not my college roommate's friend. It's a mom friend who I am not close with but like a lot. Have known her since K. Why lie? I could have said it was me-- nothing embarrassing about being Guyanese and not understanding these ludicrous options.

It may seem outlandish to you, but my town has TONS of West Indians.

Not outlandish, just a recognizable writing style.

Sorry, you are thinking I am someone else
