It appears this site won't do the history for Golden, but the closest it has history for is Denver. It was definitely below zero in Denver at different points on that day.
Not sure why pp is arguing about this. I’ve been to Denver & other places on the front range maybe a dozen or so times in my life, and I’ve experienced below zero temps multiple times.
I would argue that it doesn’t feel that bad because it’s so dry, but that’s another discussion.

Northern Arizona university has snowbowl 20 minutes away and Sedona 50 minutes away for other outdoor activities. It is not very academic but a cute mountain town. Maybe look into the honors program?

Under the radar for skiing, Michigan Tech & Northern Michigan University. I grew up in Vermont & went to grad school at CU Boulder. Mount Bohemia is legit:

University of Montana - Missoula. It's the university for liberal arts and more alternative kids. But you can fly fish in the river than runs next to campus or get to multiple local ski resorts within 1-2 hour drive.
Montana State - Bozeman is the big Greek life and D1 athletics school. Definitely a wealthier student body. Vet and Ag science. But arguably access to better skiing - Big Sky and Bridger Bowl - but also dealing with a lot more tourist traffic and prices $$$$. Housing in Bozeman is out of control expensive.
