You sound like a ‘cry baby’. Even if you must check a bag at the gate, your bag will likely be one of the first bags off. Get a grip.

I actually wasn't a grownup then. And no weeping was done. But I was on a ship in the tropics for a week with a lot of other impacted people. I didn't have a swimsuit and I'd flown wearing pants because airplanes can be cold. And my whole family was impacted. This was a very unpleasant way to experience an entire cruise. I went snorkeling in Aruba half in street clothes. As somebody else points out below, once your luggage gets lost it can take weeks to get back to you. If there was more reliability in airline behavior, people would be less concerned.
Wow. Never been on a cruise, and didn’t realize that there’s no way to buy a swimsuit once you’re on a cruise! Seems insane.
For the record, the ship's store had 4 sets of an identical Day-Glo bikini in sizes 0-6 and some men's trunks when we went to shop. However, there were dozens of people on the cruise who were missing luggage. The ports were not particularly conducive to clothing shopping unless you wanted to miss the planned excursions. The luggage was mishandled between Miami and Jamaica. Likely in Miami. Our luggage toured the Caribbean but never caught up with us again until Miami. It was certified drug-free in several different countries.

Don’t take a rolling bag— take a backpack or duffle. My last couple of flights they only required the rolling bags to be checked.

This. 20 years ago, I always checked my bags and carried a very small back pack. The trips with delayed or lost luggage in a row and I carryon now. Make the airlines pay damages for losing luggage and maybe they'll do a better job

But I can see what a PITA it is because AFTER the flight you end up with a big group of passengers blocking the passageway leaving the plane as they wait for their bags to be delivered. Plus I'm sure there are lots of people (who don't fly often and don't understand how the "check at the gate" works) who assume their bags will be at baggage claim and leave the plane, terminal and security and only figure out then that their luggage is waiting back at the gate on the other side of security.
Different airlines are different. United sent bags to the carrousel the last time I had to do it

What I've learned from recent travels is that it absolutely pays to pack light. For our 2 week vacation to Europe last month, we took only carryons. Upon arrival, the uber line was so insane that our driver had to park somewhere else to save us a 20 minute delay. If we had huge suitcases it would have been a royal pain.

Important lesson learned to throw a bathing suit, a tshirt, a pair of shorts, and undies, as well as a toothbrush, in your backpack/purse/personal item. They are small and can make a big difference if something goes wrong!

If I can fit it in a carryon I do. Often that is tough to do though. But we do bring some of the clothes in carryons so that even if it gets lost we all have a day or so of clothes to change into. Any super vital stuff that I think will be hard to buy goes into those bags too.
