4 have to be listed, they are very good but 5s are better, my kid has three 4s and one 5 and wanted top 20 so not sure that is now doable..and now demoralized and will have tougher time prepping for the SAT, this is the ugly part of perfectionism, not sure what i can tell them to cheer them up
You need 5s for top 20s? So a score of 4 will disqualify you? This is depressing. My 10th grader was really excited about getting a 4 on their first AP.
The only T20 that admitted my ‘24 student only accepted 4 on the AP Calc exam. 5s on everything else. Very few students in the freshman class receive AP credit we were told at events at the school. So my student selected a college that is lower ranked but will award credit so he can get into his major classes faster. His decision. He got all 4’s across the board.
I am more curious about whether you list the 4s on your application to top 20s. Do you list only 5s?
When my ‘24 applied, he listed the 4 he had on AP Calc junior year. It didn’t help his application but I don’t think it hurt either.

My freshman also got a 5. At their school, all 9th graders take AP Gov. iIt is crazy how different schools do things.
Basis?
My kid got a 5 in AP Gov last year in 9th. This year in 10th, they got 5s in AP Calc, AP Chemistry, and AP European History, and a 4 in AP Lit.

No. You don't need APs at all for admissions to U.S. colleges. You don't have to report your scores. When people say you need a 5 for X school, it means you would need to report a 5 after admission to opt out of an intro course.
That is certainly not what people mean. They mean that top schools look at AP scores as another indicator for admission and so having a bunch of 5s demonstrates academic excellence. Now, you might disagree with those people on the importance of AP scores for college admissions, but still, that’s what they mean. And yes, you can still get into a top school without all 5s, just like you can get in with an SAT score lower than 1500 and a GPA less than 4.0. But top students at least aim for top scores on all measures.
Admissions only looks at them if you report them, and some colleges will ignore them anyway. Of course a long list of 5s would be helpful, and you'd want to report it for sure, just like any academic award. But not having that will not "disqualify" an applicant.
AP scores can help in two ways on an application: to support a high grade you got in the class, or to show that the class grade is deflated if the AP score is higher.

Yes, my daughter got 4's on both sections. I thought she really knew the material and she wants to study engineering or physics at a top college. Now I'm not sure what do advise her to do with these results.
She has a 790 math SAT.
How did your kid and/or classmates do? I haven't heard from any other kids my daughter knows.

In that case, don't list any AP scores. Focus on grades, SATs and ECs, etc.

Oops, I take that back. Sorry. I think in the context stated, the PP was right. A particular school might require a 5 for credit.

I got up at 2am on the West Coast. For us it is very strongly linked to applications to the UK where the AP result is taken as the equivalent of an A level. Without them, no offers.

For the colleges and courses my kids are applying to, they need multiple 5's in the relevant subjects.
So no a 3 is not "good" as such.
In the UK you mean? I'm just curious. My dd is thinking of applying to a couple UK colleges. She has 3 5s, 2 4s and one 3 so far (in Precalc...she's not a Math kid)
