I mean, on a bad day my commute from the burbs to my office in DC can be nearly two hours one way…so driving to Bethany is NBD.

What kind of car do they drive? I'd take the Tesla and have some fun!! It's a really comfortable ride and fun.

Some beaches have shower facilities, like the state park in Delaware.

I think back to this because growing up we used to drive 2.5 hours to go to the Mountains for the day and then come home. It was great fun! I keep meaning to do it for the beach here but as an adult it seems like a lot of work lol. Also, we didn't have the traffic issues we back home that we have here.

My teenage daughter and her friends do this.

We do it all of the time, out the door by 6:00, on the beach by 9:15, leave by 4:30. Cooler, books, beach toys. It's not that deep. NW DC.

We’re in Bethesda, it takes 2:40 minutes with no traffic. Used to do it prekids, leave 6:30 and are at the beach at 9 or so, spend the day laying around on the beach and then head back at 5 or 6. Driving 3 hours each way is not a big deal for some people.

Where do families change clothes and shower if you’re at a beach all day? I feel gross after being at the beach or a pool for a few hours. I’m certainly not in the mood to go out to dinner or shop without a shower, clean clothes, and maybe a quick rest.

I’ve done it before but for mountains not the beach. We all had fun. Two nights in a motel ran us almost 700. For us that’s a lot. Saving money by making it an epic day trip works.

I don’t mind driving that much - I would just time it to avoid traffic. But I’d never do it with kids. Sounds like hell!

It’s a long day, but it can be fun. I don’t mind the drive to the beach at all. I have a routine where I hit a certain place for treats before hitting the beach. We like a certain place for lunch, and then it’s back on the beach until we do Minigolf or shopping, dinner, ice cream then drive home.

Ftr, we absolutely can afford a hotel but sometimes have work or travel sports that make it impossible to do an overnight. Plus, spur of the moment quick trips are fun.

We usually end up spending a week or two at the beach each summer. We tend to do the daytrips in shoulder season. And sometimes we head there for the day or quick overnight off season—primarily to shop and/or relax.

Lastly, to the op: it’s not a flex, so don’t assume malicious intent by your in-laws who posted. It’s just pics. They’re having fun. Why criticize?

As for "happier" well yeah I guess in the sense that people aren't taking pictures during a family fight. I guess I don't read anything more into a picture than "that looks nice".
