You can offer to get a previously used iPhone, which costs less, or have the teen do some chores to “earn” it. Does the teen have any savings they could use?

The problem is texts get missed, lost or out of order. So the person with the android phone if often playing catch up or confused.
This is not my experience as an android user. It used to be annoying but lately is totally fine. No issues in group chats.
There are a lot of iMessage functions that kids use that many adults don't.
Reactions, texts effects, games, voice memo, memoji, stickers, group facetime, dropping a pin for your location etc. Having an android in the groupchat can also mess up photo/video quality when you send media via SMS.
