I have a 15 year old teen. They have a group chat with and without android users. The without is far more active so they can easily thumbs up things and keep the bubbles the same color and they make a lot of plans as a group in this one. If you want your kid to be left out by all means die in this hill. Stupid and weird? Sure. They are teenagers their frontal lobe isn’t developed yet! Reduce the barriers where possible and parent through the rest.

I don’t know a single teen who uses anything but iMessage or Snapchat. If you don’t let your kid get an iPhone what is most likely to happen is he gets his friends to move the group chat off text and onto Snapchat. That’s the solution my teens friends made for androids. This isn’t an improvement

There are a lot of iMessage functions that kids use that many adults don't.

Reactions, texts effects, games, voice memo, memoji, stickers, group facetime, dropping a pin for your location etc. Having an android in the groupchat can also mess up photo/video quality when you send media via SMS.

Yeah all these people taking about how their androids don't mess up their group chats are absolutely coming from a very dated perspective.

Eventually they're going to get annoyed that they can't group facetime, or react with a sticker (my kids are constantly reacting with stickers they made from photos), or send a voice memo/talking emoji, or drop a pin, and they're gonna make a new group chat without your kid in it.

No, please don't do this. We have family members who refuse to switch to iPhone and at this point, the family just delegates one person to inform Android users. This means they miss the routine family day to day status updates and such. Socializing is a big part of teen years, do not make it unnecessary for your kid to do this. Secondly, in this area everything is related to who you know and relationships. You never know how this might bite you as the adults in the butt later.

The parents of these kids might be discussing you and your husband as unreasonable people and then word gets around, which can impact your own adult social interactions.

I used to have an android and switched because I was missing out. I liked my old phone better but the whole point of having one is to easily communicate with other humans.

Back in the day, my father refused to get MS Office for the house and made us use Corel Wordperfect because he was a programmer "in the know" and had an ideological bone to pick with Microsoft. So I spent my high school years having to convert file formats all the time between home and school (which caused issues) and losing opportunities to develop skills with Word, PowerPoint, Excel, etc., all of which I would end up needing far more in my adult working life than I would ever touch Corel again.

"We aren't an apple product loyal family." Whatever. My father would have said the same thing about Microsoft. It taught me nothing about being independent-minded and just made me think my father was rigid, contrarian, and petty, and was taking an ideological stand on other people's backs and making my life more irritating for no good reason.

This is a truly stupid hill to die on. Let him buy an iPhone. Ridiculous.
