Of the kids who posted on Instagram, Langley did pretty well this year in terms of the T20. I am assuming the other publics in this area did well too.

disagree. I think a class of 150 at private has a top half of 75 kids. There are not 75 kids at most publics putting in apps at T20s.

I think private schools do broker their kids to a greater extend. plus, ED and SCEA is a system that brokers kids for you - you move 6 to chicago, and 3 to Tulane, and 3 to MIT EA, and the double legacy kids get in SCEA at Yale, etc etc.

This equates to about 5% of seniors heading to top 20 schools. Not at all impressive compared to private schools...despite them being the "top public HS students."

Depending on the student, coming from a private may make them more attractive to certain schools. I have known students who performed better in private because of a more motivated peer college which resulted in a better college outcome.

That said public schools have strong college outcomes especially Whitman, Churchill, Yorktown or Langley because they are essentially private schools.

DC private unhooked kid, Ivy admit this year---as well as 3 other T10s and T20s.

I think the same thing. Tired of TO and grade inflation--were 'test aware', i.e, high scores mattered at T10s, and so did known rigor of the HS. T


My kid did that unhooked last year—ivy and 3 other T10s,got more admits in the T20, but they were the only kid to do it in the three local top privates . Not a single unhooked from those 3 private school had that level of success in 2021 and 2022, more like one T10 for a few of the top kids only and rest WL. It used to be 2-3 unhooked a year would have success at multiple T10, up through 2019, with another handful getting in to one T10 (ED or Rd) without multiple T10 admits. It does appear as though this yr privates are edging back to pre-TO success for unhookeds.

^hooked kids were gobbled up by T10s in 2021&2022 &2023 though, more than in past years.

It WAS viewed as the past few cycles. Now colleges are upset by the quality of TO, grade inflated HS kids and going back to old school.

Re-takes? Multiple bites/tries to raise grade ? Lack of pop quizzes? Hard deadlines? We left a FCPS Hs and all of that was there. Private was much more rigorous.


Correcting the record. For college bound kids (so honors and AP courses)

Re-takes allowed but the max you can get if your get 100% on the retake is 80. This is to keep kids from failing. Not to get them A’s.

Pop quizzes are in some of my HS kid’s classes but not all. However pop quizzes are in NONE of my T5 kid’s classes. This whole year. So what does that say?

Hard deadlines. At my kid’s FCPS school, this is absolutely not true. They start docking assignments past the due date.
