I am in the top of the field in politics/govt/IR and never got a grad degree, although I did go to an Ivy if that matters. Lots of people don't have grad degrees - most who do, have law degrees. I also have hired tons of people. I have no idea which school as the best program in specific majors. I would be delighted to hire from G'town, Brown, Dartmouth - and lots and lots of other places. Let the kid decide where to go. It'd be one thing if they were following a love interest to community college or whatever but seriously.

Sounds like a major where you need to go to grad school anyways. Why not do bachelors at the ivy and come back to Georgetown for MS?

You do realize that Cornell is an Ivy, right?

I’m not forcing my DD (MCPS) to apply to UMD, because I can’t blame her for wanting to explore the world beyond the Beltway.

Seriously, does nobody remember what it was like to be 18? It’s not like he’s following his girlfriend to State U, he’d be going to an Ivy where he’ll make all those great connections everyone on DCUM raves about. Neither option is terrible, so point out the pros and cons, then let him choose his own adventure.

The vast majority of students go to their in state college, and the vast majority of parents cannot afford private or oos.

That might not be OP's case, but you are seriously tone deaf.

Dartmouth alum here. Why was it not clear to me (but to everyone else apparently) that the choice was between Georgetown and Brown?!? Anyway, my post wasn't that helpful then. That said, I would absolutely want my kid to choose Brown over Georgetown if money was not an issue and Georgetown is basically a local school. Kids need to go and spread their wings.
