Most often, people have a mix of good and bad luck. I do know of 1 or 2 people who have had a long string of bad luck. It can happen but is not common.

To be fair you’re getting this from his mother, who knows what was actually said.
I asked a boy in high school and he said “We’re in the same friend group so I’ll see you there anyway. I’ll hangout with you there but I’m hoping for someone hotter for my actual date so don’t tell anyone I’m your date.” He ended up dateless.

Prom is lame.

I’m wondering with some of these examples if it’s the personality of the kids. Getting the worst teachers could be the kid’s perception. I’m thinking of my sibling who is super affected by teachers or bosses and coworkers and always had the mentality of what they were doing to her. She would take it home and stress over it for days and weeks.

Others in the family might seem like we had better luck, but these things just didn’t affect us like that and we are more easy going in general. To this day, I’m not taking things from work home and mentally stressing over something my boss said. My sister is.

I skipped prom. Thought it was silly. No regrets about skipping it.

This. If he was socially smarter he would have just gone to prom with the girl and had a good time. It would not have cost that much, and probably would not have led to a lasting relationship anyhow.

Your oldest son sounds like he is combining bad luck with being stubborn and not taking chances.

I feel the same about my son. It is more than just choices or perspective. Bad things just keep happening to him. Compared to my other two adult children, my son has faced far more ‘bad luck’ by far.
