Father of 2 grown boys and a daughter, also a retired Army officer here. In general unless there is actual concern for safety it's best to reassure and let them handle tough situations on their own.

In my time in the Army growing and mentoring young soldiers I have seen time and time again that most people learn and develop resiliency given the opportunity.

In short, no I wouldn't visit. I would ask how he is doing without blowing up his phone. Tell them that they are capable of pushing through challenges.
