So you are a bitter public school parent. Got it. Why are you posting here? The question was specifically directed toward private school parents.

First, our title I inbound is pretty horrific. Second, small classes (14-15 per class) and improved education and opportunities overall.

I have a quiet, artsy, musical kid. The public has virtually none of the “extras” that he loves. The private has all of it. Band, theatre, sports, art every year.

Was always going to go private for middle school. Felt like those years were extremely critical and didn't like our middle school choices.Switched to public magnet for high school.

DD consider private before starting high school but decided against it at the time.

Our high school quickly proved to be a poor environment and did not provide my daughter with the experience she wanted. She moved mid-year.

Two kids in private for very different reasons. We're in DC, if that matters.

Kid #1 - special needs. He benefits enormously from the specialized instruction, smaller classes, wraparound therapeutic support, and being seen as a whole human with potential.

Kid #2 - high-achieving. His public school was unorganized, full of kids who couldn't act right, and the standards were incredibly low. His classes aren't smaller at private school, nor are his teachers more educated or whatever. But every kid takes school seriously, understands the rules, respects the adults, and cares about their personal growth.

We switched because the size and social setting of our public school was a mess.

Also, our reason. And then we liked it and stayed. But would have never explored had it not been for COVID, as we were perfectly happy with our 'W' elementary school. However, attending our current private school made us realize some of the things out child as missing. Oddly, our private school is much more diverse than our 'W' elementary school and our DC loves not being the only one.

DP: Fewer drug and alcohol use in our private compared to our public has been absolutely true in our experience. That will vary by schools, of course. I have graduates and kids still in HS, with friends at both kinds of schools, who do not hold back and telling what is going on.
