Not sure if WM is worth the out of state price. They have increased their student population each year since my child started. They seem to be focusing more on computer science to competed with other VA schools. Their international and foreign language departments are fading. One of the best science professors is leaving. Housing is a nightmare. And out of state kids are quickly cancelled for being “rich”. It’s a very strange vibe.
Being in-state I can see the advantage of the great name, but for the out of state price, IDK.

I think W&M is a great option for this student!
What is W&M?

OP, the mention of Evergreen State wasn't a joke. The campus is in a forest and it one of the most unique learning environments out there.
https://www.evergreen.edu/
The OP's kid is interested in W&L and you're suggesting Evergreen State? That's like saying to an Oberlin hopeful, "Once you finish your campus visit, drive on up and check out Hillsdale."
No, the OP stated below in the original post:
"I haven't heard much about this one. I know it is Greek heavy, but would it be worth checking out for an outdoorsy non-preppy kid who loves the Shenandoah valley /appalachian landscape and wants to study environmental science, geoscience, etc at a SLAC/small university? We are not in VA, but W&L is closer for us than schools in the northeast"
Everything about Evergreen State is what OP's kid likes just not in Shenandoah Valley set in an immersive learning environment that gives a student the freedom to design their own coursework.
Is Evergreen state a real school?

Isn't Middlebury a lot woker than W&L? I'm thinking of the Charles Murray incident.

A somewhat similar school would be Davidson, not Roanoke.
Agree. There are a lot of pathetic posters that know nothing about the subject but post negatively because it feels good. I question any adult who would refer to young adults or kids as "preppy, douchey, bro's" for a dopamine hit. Starting to think this board is filled with a bunch of pent up day-drinking house wives that secretly long for that kind of guy vs. the mate they chose in life.
