You need a plan B if the kid hasn’t secured anything yet. School is over in 5 weeks. Some internships begin in 7 weeks. Lifeguard, Camp Counselor, etc. Make a better plan for next year and START LOOKING in SEPTEMBER!

I posted asking this question. The consensus seems to be that most freshmen don't have internships, and that includes my DS. He had applied starting in the fall last year, but I think most places want rising junior or older.

My kid started sending in applications in November and still doesn't have an internship-- or even an interview.

He takes full responsibility for the position he is in, but he did start sending in applications in November. It's not the delay that's the problem-- he evidently should have sent out his resume in the shotgun approach rather than the narrow and tailored approach that felt right to him.

OP said in her first post, "He began applying late March." That's way too late.

My freshman college son hasn’t looked for internships. He’ll work a local summer job.

My rising high school senior also has a fed internship. She probably sent off 50 applications between Oct and Feb. She only heard something from one application but that turned into an interview and an offer.

My high school senior found an internship for time before college. He is in the high school students only pool of applicants but had lots of skills by that time. Fed internship in data science.

It’s nice to have something to go back to next summer if it all works out.

My rising Jr got a paid internship in a VA. She submitted application in October and interview in late Jan and job offer within 2 weeks. If it didn't work out, she was going to study aboard for the summer or do research at the current school. She is studying robotics/biomedical. Just have a backup plan. It is hard to get internship in today economy.

Rising junior at UC school has an internship paying $10k per month (for 10 weeks) and a $7.5k sign on bonus at a quant fund. Some of his friends have internships at big tech firms.

My DD is making $15 which SUCKS but it's a great job and FT for three months, so she'll make some decent $$. Better yet, she'll learn some valuable skills that will help her find a FT job after graduation.

My DS is making $20/hour but it's only 8 weeks so he will make about the same over the course of the summer as his sister.

Most of the jobs they interviewed for paid in the 17-25/hour range. This is non-tech work.

My rising senior has paid internship in NYC at a PR firm. Pay isn’t great (maybe $20 hour?) but it is a formal program and the expectation is that you will get a job offer for after graduation.

Rising junior has a summer internship lined up (as of end of February); he is a Cybersecurity major. He started applying to summer internships in September.
