Mull this from time to time: I'm 63 and DH is 58. I left the workforce 8 years ago and now consult on short gigs while DH plans to work at least 5 more years. We had an unexpected family change this year, so five years is now a minimum as opposed to the outer limit.

TBH, I didn't think much about this for the last few years, but now, in recent months, I realize that I do envy friends who are retired and traveling/snowbirding with their spouses/partners. Now here I am all in my feels.

This is something I have thought about a lot since there is a 9-year difference between DH and me. He will likely retire at 67. I'll be 58 and will likely work 2-4 more years. But DH at 60 is already having some unexpected vision issues that are affecting his ability to enjoy some activities. (He sees multiple eye specialists and the issues aren't entirely fixable.) And there are other health issues too that make me wonder how much "adventure" we will be able to do in retirement.

As others have said, there is so much you can't predict. My own mother was diagnosed with a rare chronic disease in her 70s that was due to a chromosomal anomaly and her ability to do things became severely curtailed.
