Jackson Hole? It’s expensive but lots to do, hiking, biking, Yellowstone, rafting, paddling.

On the beach around Melbourne, Florida
Swim on the beach.
See Cape Kennedy there.
Drive up north about two hours (maybe three) to see St. Augustine.
Drive west to Orlando, to see everything but Disney.
Drive south to see the Breakers, etc. in Palm Beach.
If you hate Florida too much, stay in an inn or AirBnB around Beacon, New York.
Swim and kayak on the Hudson River beach there.
Use the commuter rail and Ubers or cabs to see West Point and other historic sites.
Go glamping.
Take the train south to around Columbia and hang out there.
Go to the museums between there and Midtown.

Yellowstone. Wish we scheduled more time there when we toured some of the national parks. Now that we've been to with natural wonders such as Hawaii and Iceland, we really appreciate more the diversity of Yellowstone.

I do want to stay put for a week. We changed accommodations 3 times in 7 days on our spring break trip which was fun and needed but exhausting.

We stayed a couple of nights in the Badlands area then a few more nights in a cabin near Hot Springs. That might be easier than finding one city to cover both areas.
I agree with this- things are spread out enough that you’re spending a lot of time in the car if you stay in one place. I’d recommend staying near Custer and then maybe near the badlands.
