This bridge is 185 feet above the water in the middle. It's unlikely to survive that fall, especially with tons of steel collapsing on you as well, regardless of age or fitness.

They rescued two alive already

Hours ago. The water is very cold, so it's unlikely they'll find more.

I do not want to sound obnoxious but every single time I am traveling on a bridge over water I am always on alert and anticipate that I could end up in the water at any moment.

Same, it's a massive fear of mine. I actually wind down my window so I can get out if my car ends up in the water.
It's even worse now that I'm always driving with my toddler in her car seat in the back seat..

So sorry for those people who were on the bridge, it happened so quick

I wind up the windows and have this tool ready if we fall in the water.
I image that if you have the windows down, the water would flood the car with such force that you couldn't fight it and it would submerge the car more quickly.

Watch videos on this. these hammers are worthless with the new safety glass that doesn't shatter. A blow just creates a spiderweb of shatters that is almost impenetrable. Cars are now being manufactured with this glass on the sides as well as the front and back. You need to roll the windows down immediately -it's the only hope of survival.

Norfolk or Newark. Or it might be cheaper to fly the passengers home from another port of call.

They're stuck.

Every single boat and ship in the harbor is stuck. This is a huge disaster.

No, that's how bridges are designed - each part relies on the other. This was a single continuous truss part of the bridge (the other parts are still standing) so if one part fell, all will fall.

Let me guess. This is probably all the result of poor maintenance of the ship to save a few $ to minorly boost profit. The ship has an electrical failure and loses a control as a result, causing this fiasco.

It was probably consultants who prescribed reduced maintenance of the ship to save on costs that resulted in this. It's entirely their MO like the train crash disaster in Ohio where they proposed to cut staff and maintenance to the bone.

I was actually thinking about this. Maybe you could grab onto and climb a little up one of the collapsed pilings? I doubt you can save an infant but maybe an older child if they can swim. Has anyone that was on the bridge in a car been found alive???

Those pilings are covered in sharp barnacles and slick algae with very cold water temps. The impact hitting the water and debris is another issue. Bad conditions all around even if they did escape the car.

Here's an account of someone who survived a 27 foot fall off the Bay Bridge. One of the windows shattered upon impact on the water.

would this actually break the glass of a fully submerged vehicle? I keep reading that nothing will break that class and only chance is to have rolled down the window before being submerged.

Watch the video someone posted at 7:15. The car floats for a while when the windows are closed. If you have a child in the car, there's no way they will know to hold their breath upon impact. I don't think I could react fast enough with the windows down.
