Maybe I’m parsing this too closely, but it sounds like there is still a path to do one YiW, one year in CAS in Charlottesville and then enter Mcintire as a 2nd year? So a total of five years? Has anyone explored this or confirmed it?

Yes, this has been confirmed by McIntire. You can still apply during your second year and spend 3 years in McIntire. So 2+3=5.

But now McIntire starts 2nd year. It’s in writing that the YiW is for A&S and you can’t do McIntire. Seems pretty clear.

We have friends whose oldest did this when the YiW was probably in its second year? The cohort was even smaller (70?) and they were a tight bunch. They moved to UVA and stayed friends. Between YiW and high school friends, she probably had a larger friend group than most.

Can you link to where it says you can’t do YiW to Mcintire? Because that seems different than “you can’t do YiW to Mcintire in four years”.

Do you think McIntire admissions is going to take a waitlisted kid over those who were admitted to UVA even if the waitlisted one was willing to do an extra year?

This. It's a no brainer for a year!

I really wish I knew what their major was and what the southern school was so we could compare academics

Harvard is not a state flagship.

I transferred universities after my freshman year (not UVA, schools not relevant). As a result, I have an appreciation for alternate methods of reaching one's dream school or most-affordable high-ranked choice.

Why be a snob when deferred gratification can help you reach your goal?

I’d love to know what OP’s child ultimately picked last year and how it’s gone.

Neighbor kid did the 1st year at Wise. Made a lot of friends with others doing the exact same thing. The "transfer" cohort hung together while at Wise. Still had a traditional 1st yr experience (on a smaller scale) and had friends in C'ville that she originally met at Wise.

Not a good option for Engineering or Nursing, but it is just fine for Arts & Sciences students.

A full ride sounds really nice! Top 100? I assume that is Auburn? Clemson? UGA?

With a free ride? Congrats!

Choice is down to: UVA - in state, full pay (UVA) via transfer from UVA Wise, or a 100% full scholarship, Honors program, to an OOS large school in south, which they really like but academics at UVA are of course much better.

What did your DD pick. If I were her, pick full ride and get new car with $ save to driver herself back and forth!
