Yeah, screw those people. Let them die of heart attacks or strokes. Cause they don't deserve to live if they are this lazy.

I didn’t see any of that in what was posted. I did see a lot of true facts. Do you dispute any of that as it relates to the American population and their behavior?

But yes, Americans have a weight problem.

This is not even close to accurate.

I'm also 5'8. At 150 lbs BMI is 22.8, well within the "normal" weight category. To be in the overweight category you'd have to be at least 165, and that's 0.1 into the overweight category. To be in the obese category you'd have to be at least 198 lbs, and again that is 0.1 into the obese category. So basically 50 lbs more than what you said.

My body fat was measured at 32% at the time. So…clinically obese.

If you’re a woman you NEED to have body fat. Way higher than a man. You need to menstruate, right?? If your body fat gets too low, like a gymnast, you don’t menstruate and it’s not good for you. This class you took was not helpful.

Gymnasts are more like 8-10% body fat. Yes, that’s unhealthy if it’s not your body’s natural state.

That’s just not true. I am 5’5 and 150lb puts me at a BmI of 25. Basically under 250lb and I’m a healthy weight. You aren’t “clinically obese” at 5’8 and 150, you are a healthy weight. As someone who is 5’5 I’m not even obese until I hit 180.

Sadly, this was all measured and part of a college fitness class. I was 32% fat and therefore clinically obese. Which is the same reason BMI is crap- body composition is what matters, not weight.

I am max, 10 pounds heavier than I should be.

I mean… what you’re wearing doesn’t tell us anything. Lots of obese/overweight women squeeze into clothing that is clearly too small for them, probably in an effort to convince themselves that they really are that size.

Yes, I think people sometimes have this idea of what obese looks like, but someone who is 5’7” and obese at 195 is not going to look that huge, really (especially if your mental image is 300+).

Yup. I am 5'6" weigh 197 lbs and am clinically obese. I look like a healthy yet chubby middle aged woman, but according to the BMI charts, I am obese.

Exception 2

This is just this thread. I probably didn’t even find them all. Everybody is an exception. It comes up every time BMI is discussed.

Ok let me rephrase: an exception to what? These posters both admit they’re obese so how are they claiming to be an exception in a thread asking if a lot of people are obese?

The purpose behind these lengthy explanations is an effort to infer BMI as a metric isn’t useful. It is.

Only on a population level, not an individual level. It was never meant to be used the way we are using it.

Yet it is for 90% of people, and we still get all these dumb references to professional athletes by people who are none of those things. 90% of obese people in the US have very high body fat percentages for their gender and age, and low relative muscle mass. Nobody needs a study to realize that to be true.

So you agree, it’s useful at the population level. That’s just what you said.

It’s useful both at a population and individual level. All the attempted anecdata here to cook up exceptions won’t change that. 90% obese people are extremely unhealthy, and it’s probably higher than that. That’s the reality nobody wants to face.

And, if they do “face” the reality it ends up being a bunch of external forces causing these issues and has nothing to do at all - ever - with individual behavior. See a pattern yet?

This. I have a teenage son and we were at a national competition and so many kids are overweight. So many.

I’m in this camp. I am heavier than anyone else on this thread, definitely obese and wear a 14/16. Can’t find the meds anywhere. I’m frustrated.

^This couplet. Just wow.
