This is an absurd comment. It is in the inner city. You need to be aware of what is going on just like you would be walking around other inner city areas. To argue the area isn't better than 10 or 20 years ago, it just not being honest.

My son takes the metro home all the time. If it is late at night usually after 8 (but only if it is dark), we pick him up. Some of that is safety some of it is basic quicker at that point.

If you are concerned about the neighborhood then Gonzaga is probably not the right school for you, as a parent.

And, yes, the locals know to leave the Gonzaga boys alone.

But you proved the point that you need to be aware of whats going on in an inner city. So why is absurd if you literally said the exact same thing.

I know DCUM isn't about reading comprehension but maybe you should start. The point of "these days" implies it is worse than it has ever been which is an absurd comment. Which isn't true. So my comment is a push to recognize that being in the city requires common sense but then I added that qualifier "to argue the area isn't better than 10 or 20 years ago." See now it makes sense.

Meanwhile you still said you need to be aware of your surroundings, like I said to begin with. The city was not looking good until the Federal Government cleaned it up. Once they move on, it will be back to the same old inner city crime that ALL inner cities have, like you previously stated.

They cleaned it up?

Your DS will be fine but like others said, keep your eyes and ears open and be aware of your surroundings. Avoid any scuffles on the street or in the metro station. The occasional druggie hallucinating with a knife or stray bullet doesn’t discern if your son is wearing purple or any other color.

Our son has never had a problem - takes metro after athletics most nights. Be smart, keep to yourself, and watch your surroundings. Neighborhood generally respects and watches out for the kids

It is true that the Gonzaga boys are viewed as part of the neighborhood and are definitely left alone.

DS is at Gonzaga and I agree with this. Gonzaga is a valued part of the neighborhood, and if anything, the locals look out for the boys.

My DS has never had a problem with safety but does take common sense safety precautions. If he’s walking to the metro or otherwise walking around the neighborhood, he always walks in a group. He pays attention to his surroundings and we remind him not to be distracted by his phone, air buds, etc. If he’s leaving campus after dark for a sports practice or a game, we generally try to pick him up or carpool home. Although, he sometimes wants to take metro home from games or events after dark at school and we’ve been okay with that as long as he stays with a group.

The campus itself is very secure (security guards and locked iron gates). I know there is crime in the area, but during the day, there is a lot of foot traffic from businesses, restaurants, etc. and I’ve personally walked around the area and never felt unsafe.
