It’s not a scholarship. It’s an honors program that frees students from core requirements, gives registration priority, allows them to pursue an interdisciplinary major, etc. Students are invited during the admissions process

Depends on your region. My kid has first round interviews this Saturday morning. I believe our region already had some first round interviews last weekend. There is at least a second round. I’m not sure if there is a third.

My kid is applying to be a Jefferson scholar (12/2) but will only apply to UVA (regular decision, 1/5) if they are in the running for the scholarship. Crossing my fingers that the timelines work out.

Must a nominee apply to UVA?
Our scholarship selection process is completely separate from the University of Virginia’s Office of Undergraduate Admission. In order to be eligible to receive a scholarship, nominees must have applied to UVA and ultimately gain admission. Our scholarship competition does not consider whether a student applies Early Action, Early Decision, or Regular Decision.
Yes, I got all that. Hoping the timing of Jefferson advancement comes in ahead of the RD deadline. If no on Jefferson, UVA gets crossed off the list entirely. If we don't hear, then the kid will apply to UVA RD.
A quick google will tell you that it’s a months long process—Jeff Scholars finalist not selected for final interviews until February.

It made the whole process less attractive than say, Morehead Cain -- it's a lot of work to go through if you don't ultimately get in. As I said above, last year all finalists who had applied RD were told on a call that they had been admitted. (The early applicants already knew they were in.)
Jefferson scholars automatically get Echols status.
