This. I currently live in Georgia (military) and we have pretty much prohibited our kids from going to school here. It's very insular, and most people believe the world stops at the state line. UGA is a great school, but socially, I would not want my kids there. Like someone else pointed out in an older thread, it's a great school if you're going to go straight back to Milledgeville and work at Daddy's insurance agency.

You sound insufferable.

I don't see you living here.. because you know I'm right!

I feel sorry for her family.

I feel sorry for her kids because they are living in state that their parent has contempt for. That is not a great way to grow up.

Athens has chain restaurants and a whole bunch of bars that cater to students. Whereas College Park... doesn't have that?
Doesn’t Athens have a nice downtown with non chain restaurants and stores that is adjacent to the campus?
yes

OP here. My DD did apply to UMD but doesn’t want to go there because it doesn’t have a college town and that is important to her.

UGA has better football.

This. UGA is a much prettier campus than UMD. Additionally, Athens is a much nicer town than College Park.

I never understood the draw of UMD. College Park is such a dump! We went to visit UGA and LOVED Athens. The campus is so much nicer than Maryland.

Couldn’t agree more. The drive into UMD is not the best way to introduce anyone to the University of Maryland.

That’s the point. There is a whole thread on Yale and the dangers of New Haven. Penn is in an awful, crime ridden part of Philly. Doesn’t keep students from those schools.

I don’t know. That’s just like somebody saying well we got into Yale but we didn’t want to go because of the safety issues. Auburn certainly would be less stress and SEC schools are great.
