1 caprese salad. Get the Costco big bucket of marinated mozzarella bars and a pack of compari tomatoes. Cut the tomatoes in quarters, throw in bowl. Use a large slotted spoon and scoop mozzarella balls into bowl. Stir. If you think you need more dressing, spoon some of the marinade from the mozzarella balls into it. Done.

2. Grilled asparagus. Trim asparagus, throw in a large ziplock with salt, crushed garlic and olive oil. Marinate for 10-15 minutes. Throw on grill. Throw into a disposable aluminum container. Done.

3. Do #2 but add sliced red and green peppers, onions, squash, zucchini , mushrooms etc. grilled vegetable salad.

I always bring pigs in a blanket and they always disappear. I see all the fancy people scarfing them down when they think nobody's looking.

A "Mexican" spinach dip w/ tortilla chips. People always ask me for the recipe (it's America's Test Kitchen and behind a paywall so can't share it here).

No one ever eats the veggie tray. Might as well just bring chips and salsa or hummus and pita and carrots.

Veggie trays only work if you buy excellent organic produce and cut it up yourself. Those store-bought veggie trays are all dried out and virtually never any good.

I would argue that the veggie tray from
Wegmans is the exception, especially if you are ordering catering and it was made the day before for your order. I am always the one person at the party eating the veggie tray and I have compared them all! This one is far superior to the others. Cutting it up yourself is obviously the best option but not always possible.

For this particular potluck, they don't need anymore desserts or clearly easy things (like rolls). So I guess I'm looking for a main, a side, or a veggie option. I can cook more complicated things, but I have very little energy remaining at this point in the holiday season so bonus points if it's easy.

Do you have any tried and true dishes that you care to share? Inspire me!

Meatballs with grape jelly and chili sauce

Thank you - I hadn't yet thrown up today, but promptly did after reading that.

It's totally vile but the older Midwesterners will defend this to the death, so watch out!

I wouldn’t defend these meatballs in the sense that I think everyone should like or even try them, but I will defend them insofar as you really can’t conjure up what they would taste like just by hearing the ingredients; if you’ve never tried them, whatever you’re imagining is probably not accurate.

Queso (just Velveeta and Rotel) and chips. If you are making a lot, crockpot. For a little, a small rice cooker on warm works. People act snooty about it but they sure do eat it.

Anonymous wrote:For the grape jelly or cranberry sauce mixed with chili sauce, what is this chili sauce? Is it a ketchup based one that comes in a round jar or something spicier, like enchilada sauce?

Heinz makes a chili sauce in a small ketchup looking bottle. It's with the other condiments.

Baked puffed pastry with ham, swiss cheese and dijon mustard. Cut into squares and serve with cranberry dipping sauce.

I’m not an older Midwesterner. And personally, the meatballs, or pigs in blankets, or deviled eggs are not my thing. But damn if I haven’t seen all of those things devoured at parties, so I’d happily serve them.

I know you and PP are desperately trying to show your superiority here, but it just makes you look like aholes. Lighten up.
