He was in Special Ed classes from K until 10th grade. He didn't excel until 11th grade when he scored 1580 on the SAT, 36 on ACT and was accepted to UVA. He wanted to prove to himself that he had what it takes to graduate early so he took summer classes to achieve that goal. He will be working for Apple in two months after taking time off to travel with his GF. He will attempt the GMAT exam in a few months. This proves that it is possible for a SN child to succeed if he/she works hard at it.

Awww...congrats! This is great and you should be so proud!

What does it mean he was in special ed classes through 10th grade? I didn't know that US schools offered special ed classes any longer. I thought everything was just pull outs and support in the mainstream classroom. And how does a kid who doesn't take regular college prep courses till junior year get a GPA good enough to get into a competitive school like UVA? Will they admit just on the basis of a high SAT like this kid's score?

I ask because DC had an IEP through through senior year and didn't get great grades at his high rigor and very competitive high school. But he did well on the SAT and several SLACs were willing to look beyond just his GPA to see that he had the aptitude to do well at their school. Thankfully, he has thrived at his SLAC and is on track to graduate on time and with great recommendations from faculty.

Wow!!! You should be so proud of him for overcoming so much and working so hard at achieving his goals. Also, big congrats to you (the parents) for supporting him through what sounds like a challenging education. Thanks for sharing a success story with us.
