Very obese people can get knees replaced. I know people who did. But unless they are motivated to do the painful rehab the results will be meh.

I think the OP said she is obese.
No, OP said it was her knees. She probably needs two knee replacements. I would do that first. She can have the surgery on both and then go into a rehab facility to recover.

I think the OP said she is obese.
No, OP said it was her knees. She probably needs two knee replacements. I would do that first. She can have the surgery on both and then go into a rehab facility to recover.

It is true you cannot *make* someone change their life.
However.
Sometimes people just get in over their head. They don’t want to be a bother. They’re embarrassed. They may have lost the ability to affect a change by themselves.
I think it’s worth your DH sitting his mother down someplace neutral and saying, “look, we are worried about you. We are worried about your mobility and we fear your living situation is a bad scene. We are ready and willing to help you improve your mobility, your health, and help get you into a living situation that you like and that you can live out the rest of your life in. We would like to help you. Will you let us help you?”
If the answer is no, there is nothing you can do.
But at least you have opened the door and when the inevitable emergency happens, you will be better positioned to swoop in.
Just never say “I told you so.”
If DH cannot do all this he needs therapy.
