Many of our family's favorites are already on the lists folks have posted, so I'll just add:

Arthur Christmas

Very British, animated (from the folks who made "Wallace and Gromit" and "Chicken Run" though it's not stop-motion), and absolutely lovely. Funny and sweet. Check it out in advance if you have young kids who might be thrown by the premise that Santa is a position held by Claus family fathers and sons through the ages. it's a hilarious look at how Santa gets all those gifts delivered in just one night, and what it really means to be Santa Claus!

I love The Family Stone. It's ridiculously unbelievable, as well as just ridiculous, in a lot of ways. But hey, it's a holiday movie. I thought the acting was good and it was a feel good movie (FTMP).

I agree this is a great movie with one very notable exception - the mother's hairstyle is NOT reflective of that era! No women went around with hair like that in the 40s. It was an 80s-style highly permed hairdo. I love watching the movie but this continuity error nags at me every time I watch it.

When Harry Met Sally is a great Christmas / New Year's movie that isn't about either.
