Most of the 900 violent carjackings in DC did not result in a death.
And I am sure things were worse iN the 90s.

The government could do more by providing free cars for those under 18.

Sure and then you’ll be called racist and lose your job and have protestors at your front door. And probably crazy legal fees and jail time.
Many years ago, I was attacked in DC by a someone in the middle of a mental health crisis. The person ended up cutting and me herself before running off. I was scared that I might have contracted HIV, hepatitis C, or a similar disease due to the possible exchange of bodily fluids. I chased my attacker not because I wanted her punished with imprisonment (although she did need to be removed from the community until she could be stabilized). But I wanted her to be tested for various diseases to find out if I was at risk for anything. The police officer who responded to my call told me I was lucky I was not able to catch her because I otherwise I--not her--would have likely ended up with charges.
I should have moved away from the city then.

Anonymous wrote:All this arguing over adults vs. kids doesn’t matter. They don’t need to be sentenced as adults and given incredibly lengthy prison sentences in order for punishment to have a deterrent effect. We need swift and certain punishment. There is a ton of research on this.

By law, they are entitled to “youthful offender” status, and understandably treated differently when they slip up. Everyone makes mistakes. Youthful offender goes up to age 26 in DC.
Don’t you want to give children a second chance?
Nope not when they are engaged in violent crimes
Like I literally just don't care
Locking ppl up LT does stop them from committing crimes and provides some deterrence
How's all this light / no sentencing working out?
Jesus Christ. Listen to yourself. You want to sentence kids to long-term prison sentences. You are lacking a serious mental compass.
ANd are an example of the depths of sh--- this country is sinking to.
Violent 25 year olds are not kids
They are kids until they reach the age of 26. Before that their brains aren't fully formed. I'm sorry, but that's just basic science.
Are you for real?
Wait until you're a victim of one of these junior thugs, and then we'll see what you have to say.![]()

What WILL stop them then? Please enlighten us.
Sending good parents back in time to raise them properly. By the time they’re teens committing crimes the opportunity to instill values is gone. This isn’t the fault of teachers or police - its the parent’s fault.
+1. The largest percentage of crime is due to parents not doing their job. In being shitty parents they’re forcing everyone else in society to pay the price. Teachers, cops, paramedics, ER personnel, citizen-victims.
There’s huge swaths of the population where its part of the culture to be (or non-existant) a bad parent.
Which exact “huge swaths of the population” are you referring to?
Be specific.
We see you.
