Subject: 6th graders spent whole party on phones
DS is in 7th this year and has a watch but no phone. At a couple of recent activities he complained that about half the kids were on the phone the whole time and commented that he understood why I was reluctant to get him a phone. He's also a little judgey of his friends who are allowed more screen time than he is... which we are working on as it's not a great look. He knows if I was less "strict" he'd be online all the time.

I have 3 kids. 2 of them love crafts. My 12yo has never liked anything art related.
I once suggested a paint party for my art loving son and he said his friends would be bored.

Nothing at all wrong with a crafting party, at any age. As long s the crafts were age and ability appropriate. If someone doesn’t like crafts, they shouldn’t have went.me if you finish early, you talk with each other, as you should have been doing all along while doing crafts. Kids don’t know know how to socialize in person anymore

Agree this seems a little young of a party for this age. Crafts are for probably 10 and under. 12 should maybe do bowling, escape room. Also, WAY too big of a group at this age. And like I always tell people, if you want me off my phone, be more interesting. It's true - if you were more interesting than my phone, I wouldn't be on it. The party probably wasn't that interesting.
You cannot be a grown person with this comment. Ever look to see what the teens are engrossed in? It’s not the NYT or the latest international news.
+1. We’re expected to be interesting, unlike the person whose nose is glued to her phone?

Not trying to be mean but a craft bday party? I know your daughter must love crafting, but not every girl does. I’m sure they were just killing time after the craft was completed. Next time try a more high energy bday where they don’t even want to touch their phones.

Why, are you 12 years old too? And just because some middle school kids enjoy running around after school doesn’t mean they can’t be interested in other activities. You make sports friends sound like a bunch of low IQ grunting Neanderthals who don’t know how to do anything that doesn’t involve kicking a ball around and when confronted with something different they can only stare at a screen and hope it goes away.
Plenty of kids who don’t care about sports have gone to sports birthday parties and participated and had a good time. People, stop making excuses for poor manners and ignorance.
Exactly. Kids need to learn how to navigate situations where they aren’t constantly stimulated. You think one day at work they can tell their boss “sorry, work is boring, so I was on my phone” or “my mom always has to be able to text me so I can’t leave my phone in my bag during this meeting.” You are NOT equipping your kids with important life skills and are excusing their need to numb out on a screen because you’ve taught them to do that since they were toddlers and you handed a phone at them to pacify them.

I'm sorry, OP, it sounds like the friends were rude. I would have loved a crafting party at that age.
I like crafting too. I’m not good and don’t stick with anything long but it’s fun.
Most kids are just happy to hang out together whatever they’re doing. These kids sound like boring duds. Don’t blame the crafts because your kid can’t find pleasure in things like hanging out with friends or kids they just met and talk while doing silly crafts.
