i used to ride the bus every day for many years. if i had to make a list of reasons why it sucked and hopefully i will never do it again, car traffic would not be in the top 20. there are SO many other reasons to hate the bus.

Such as the threat of violence? Can't tell you how many buses I've been on where people start screaming obscenities at each other for reasons that are difficult to understand.

This. I get the sense that the folks pushing dedicated lanes have never actually taken the bus.

My 14 year old takes metro to school (green line to red line, 40 mins trip. She has witnessed violence on metro and on buses (there’s a bus line that would take her nearly door to door), but says buses are worst. We’ve all seen it, and the news stories are horrific.

How many violent crashes has she seen from your car, and how many horrific crashes have you/she seen in news stories? There's a general view among some in middle-class society that public transportation is intolerably unsafe, while car crashes are just one of those things that happen to other people. (To say nothing of carjackings.)

Dedicated bus lanes are one of a group of solutions to make buses more reliable and convenient.

The difference being, that's an actual dedicated bus lane, and the red lanes in D.C. aren't.

Riding the bus is scary.

No you are scared to ride the bus, it is not scary.

I've ridden buses all over this region - most riders in all 3 jurisdictions are exhausted working class Latinos.

The reason why the earlier poster can't tell us how many buses he's been on when people start screaming obscenities is because he doesn't actually ride buses.

I do and there have been a few incidents in my 35 years of living here but they pale in comparison to the wild west traffic accidents I see out the window almost every week.

Have you ever been on a bike? Or a bus? It actually is a dedicated bus lane.

Yeah, and a sidewalk is a dedicated bike lane.

Look up what dedicated means. A lane that a bus shares with other forms of transportation is the opposite of a lane that’s dedicated only for bus transportation.

If people want to call them red lanes, go for it. They’re not dedicated bus lanes, by definition (and every time it’s been brought up before, people here seem _extremely_ hostile to lanes that are dedicated to buses and bus transportation in general).

It's astounding that motorists would be angry about bus lanes. They seem unaware that buses reduce traffic congestion and take cars off the road, making your experience as a motorist BETTER. Every bus can replace 30-60 cars and takes up far less room on the highway than those cars.

But no, instead people are selfish and ignorant and clueless.

Except hardly anyone rides the bus because people hate taking the bus. Now we’re going to ticket people for driving in bus lanes that are almost always empty? Ok. Makes sense.

There are over 400,000 bus rides a day in DC.

You've never actually ridden a public transportation bus so you have no idea.

I'm sure those details will be closely enforced, just like the many rules around bikes making "Idaho stops" and marijuana possession are closely policed.

I don't understand. Are you saying that drivers are scofflaws?

Think how green the county will be with 2 lanes sitting almost totally unused and the remaining lane choked with cars idling in traffic 24/7/365.

Good job!

People in D.C. just drive in the bus lanes. It's not that big of deal.

Love how we can't get our elected leaders to lift a finger to do something about out of control crime, but they're more than happy to go after average tax paying citizens who dare drive in bus lanes that are empty 99.5 percent of the time.

Giving half the city tickets for driving in bus lanes while throwing your hands up at a 100+ percent increase in carjackings is going to go over real well with voters at election time.
