Why ashamed to be “old”?
It’s not a secret. It’s not about shame. It’s that it’s rude to ask personal questions — unless there’s an actual need to know the information. There’s a whole list of nosy questions that I probably would not respond to, and part of that is because some seemingly innocuous questions aren’t, and I don’t want the burden of having to gently handle other people’s responses to my circumstances.
So, I’m old enough to say : “Why do you ask?” And my response depends upon their answer. “Good” answers, by my standards, are things like: “I wonder if you remember Ida’s and the Kalorama Rink”. and “My brother went to Wilson too. You might know him.” “Bad”answers are more about curiosity and comparisons. You don’t need to know my age if what you really want to know is what cosmetics I use.

Welcome to eart, alien. Here on earth women aren’t allowed to age. It’s a complex social stigma to be old and female. There are some women who ignore this requirement but they’re not the norm.
Women are as guilty of applying the complex social stigma. I get tired of pretending otherwise.
Yes women in our society internalize misogyny. I never argued that wasn’t the case above.

I was volunteering the other week and another volunteer asked me which high school I attend. We volunteer with teens. I said I graduated from high school in the 1990s....
I also work with teens and young adults and they ask me as well at times because they are curious. They often say, you talk like you have so much work experience but you look like you are 25....
