I’ve been in the county for a long time and have never been denied leave or been harassed for not having a sub. Is this really a problem countywide?

And many schools also have a preferred sub list. We would rather contact someone we know is good rather than leave it to chance. If no one on our preferred sub list can do it, we post on the sub system. If that's not picked up, our administrators and secretaries contact systemwide subs or ask people to cover in-house.

It's upsetting that they're such a sub shortage. With all the people on this forum, maybe some of you can sign up to sub!

They need to pay more than $20/hour. It’s insulting and not a living wage. It’s gross that people think this is okay.

+1

This. I've considered subbing. I am a good teacher and need flexible work, but I won't sub for $20 an hour. It needs to be more than that. I can get other work that is easier and just as flexible for $25 to $45 an hour.

The sub rates are negotiated by the union. Why doesn't the union push for higher sub rates? $20 per hour is ridiculous and just means that teachers will lose planning periods to sub.

Because after all the anti-racist audits, leader in me SEL training, and electric busses, there just isn't anything left.

But the racist teachers and principals still have jobs. FAIL.

You mean during the 2 years you worked from home?

TO THE @sshole troll above, I work at a private school, so that did not apply to me. We were open when you could not or would not parent. Goodbye!

My kid's teacher is out sick today. We've already been prewarned that the class will likely be covered by the teacher in the adjoining classroom. That means that the other teacher will be responsible for 50 elementary students. Not an enviable postition to be in.
I also work in field that uses subs (child care) and we HAVE to have subs when people are out because of licensing child: adult ratios. We're in the process of hiring at least one full time sub because there is a need for one EVERY SINGLE day.

Jntil then it's a popularity contest and admin have been know to be vindictive ego maniacs who fire people for no cause. Oh yeah, and they lie to unemployment office and say you quit.

Most jobs don’t have guaranteed support or protections ever because they don’t have a union. If the policy is enter your request in the system do that. If the policy is call the main office and enter in the system do that. You do not have to find your own sub. Admin can want it or appreciate it all they want but it is not a requirement for teachers.
