Not all of them. Only specially equipped cars and officers who are certified to use the automated reader system. The officer only gets alerts when a plate flags. Otherwise it’s automated. And being parked illegally does not flag.

Were you near a federal building (US courthouse, for example) where federal police/security are present? The hydrant was within their jurisdiction and therefore they ("the feds" ) ticketed you?

also i should add that i was iN THE CAR during the bagel run. I could have easily moved the car. cop just gave me a ticket anyway. i guess bored.

How incredibly lazy. Why couldn't DH drop you off to go get the bagels and drive around the block instead of parking in front of a fire hydrant? What's wrong with you?

Bottom line is it is illegal and immoral to park in front of a hydrant. I get it if you aren’t aware for whatever reason (street parking is busy, you couldn’t see from the drivers side).

I can run your plates for investigatory purposes any time I want if I see you 1) committing a moving violation, 2) engaged in suspicious behavior (ie appearing to be cruising a block for drug sales, prostitution, casing, etc), 3) possible indicators of driving under the influence, 4) mechanical defect with vehicle (broken lights, windshield damage, excessive smoke etc), 5) reasonable suspicion the vehicle is stolen or any other visible evidence of felony activity. I will typically run plates before I make a stop. It’s not a certainty for identifying the driver before they hand me their ID, since people sometimes do drive other people’s cars, but it’s probably the owner 90% of the time.

Standing at fire hydrant for 5 minutes is sufficient to have me run your plates. Drop your passenger off and go park somewhere or circle the block until they call you and say they’re ready to be picked up again. Don’t be a jerk.

OP is entitled, like many in the DMV. They believe they are special, and that the rules others must obey do not apply to them. Think parking in crosswalks at school pick up, rolling through stop signs, ignoring the "no turn on red" sign, and so many more
