If someone comes home with groceries and the other person isn’t home or is engaged in some other useful activity, then the person puts the groceries away themselves.
This logic holds for spouses, kids, and anyone else who is staying at the home.
This is what works for us, too. It’s laid back and unofficial, but typically effective.
That said, sometimes DH will wander in when I’m in the middle of something like this or washing dishes or whatever, and he’ll just casually lean against a counter and start chatting away. That drives me crazy. He can be oblivious, so I have to remind him to help.
