If you are exempt it means you have other funding so your leave should stay the same. If you are excepted, then your leave is cancelled and hopefully your management will furlough you to be reasonable.

The shutdowns was likely avoided last week due to a sheer miscalculation on the ex-Speaker's part. K-Mac gambled that Dems would not take no for an answer for Ukraine support and vote no. That way, he would have the Dems to blame. To his surprise, they took the pragmatic path. I don't think any such options will emerge this time. I am leaning 80-20 towards a shutdown. I am a Fed and I think it is terrible. Not just for the work pileup but it completely screws up our spending plans and leads to a mad scramble when full year approps are released. The trouble with these kind of uncertain year over year approps for science funding is terrible -- science is a multi-year process and this uncertainty is terrible for planning.

How does one do this?

Each agency has its own process, but they’re probably all very similar. There’ll be a form that you submit to your ethics lawyers who look to see if you’re violating law/policy (basically, if you’d be getting paid to do the kinds of things the government is paying you to do). You need to have a job lined up first though, so that the form is specific. Also, there are some jobs you have to get prior approval for and some you don’t.
