OP, what level math did they complete? Foreign Language? Did they load-up on too many AP classes? Was their overall schedule just too difficult?

I've seen parents overload their kid w too many AP classes and then are surprised when their GPA (even when weighted) stinks.

OP here. More of a city kid. He's mentioned Chicago, NY, Miami, Philly.

Lasalle (Philly)

Lynn (Miami)

Columbia College of Chicago (Chicago)

LIU (close to NYC)

Marymount Manhattan (in NYC)

Just pick anything from T100 down. Why is that hard?

VCU. Only half the people I know who went there actually graduated.

College of Charleston in South Carolina.

Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania.

Goucher College in Maryland.

Suwanee--The University of the South in Tennessee. (breathtaking campus & location).

Salve Regina University in Rhode Island (gorgeous campus & beautiful location).

Rollins College in central Florida. (Country club like atmosphere).

Susquehanna University in Pennsylvania.

University of Arizona in Tucson, Arizona.

Arizona State University in Tempe/Phoenix.

University of Kansas.

Flagler College in St. Augustine, Florida. (gorgeous).

Palm Beach Atlantic University in West Palm Beach, Florida. (Leans conservative & Christian).

Stetson University in Florida.

Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida.

Eckerd College in St. Petersburg, Florida. (Environmental Studies, Marine Biology, Biology, Psychology.)

Clemson University in South Carolina. (slight chance)

Coastal Carolina University in South Carolina. (Myrtle Beach metro area).

Maybe the University of Denver in--guess where--Denver, Colorado.

Too many more to list. Would be helpful if more information about your son was shared.

Any interest in Maritime colleges ?

How did you come up with these schools? Just seems random. OP said HS GPA < 3.0. Ideally in a big city.

I could have listed well over 1,000 colleges & universities, but chose these schools to give OP's son a wide variety of options to consider. And, yes, some are not located in cities which was an "ideal preference" according to the student's parent who posted this thread.

Universities such as ASU, U Arizona, and the University of Kansas offer a lot to average and below average students. College of Charleston offers an exciting location in a beautiful city adjacent to the ocean. I should have included Kansas State--which is high on a bluff, not on flat prearie land.

I do admit that Clemson is a reach and that I probably should not have listed it.

OP: If you need more options, I will be happy to give more.

Good for almost assured admission, but not-so-good regarding educational environment. The retention rate is around 75%--which is not good.

I think this is an excellent list. OP mentioned city but seems to understand beggars can’t be choosers. I’d also add the Penn State branch campuses with housing.

I would also look at CUNY and SUNY colleges. Some have high admissions rate, are decent schools, and still a reasonable price for OOS students.

My DS CLAIMS he wants to go to college, but his behavior, & grades do not support that claim. We're in the 11th grade, & I know we need to start at least identifying colleges, to start visiting and applying next year.

NOT INTERESTED IN COMMUNITY COLLEGES! I want him to go away, get out of the DMV, which I think will help tremendously, & experience college campus life, hoping it will turn him around. But, starting out the gate, early signs point to him NOT getting into, for a lack of better words, a "GOOD or Highly sought after" college. Open to location.

Any thoughts or recommendations? If you can, please refrain from bashing.

OP, have him do his OWN research on a site like collegefactual.com or niche.com where he has to make a profile with his GPA. Chancing schools and seeing costs were a much needed reality check for my junior 2 years ago. Fast-forward, busted his ass and upped GPA enough to get into 3 of 11 viable options.

College is a really vague concept even for kids who think they want to get a degree.

Let him figure out some of it himself.

I would also recommend collegevine.com. FWIW, 100% accurate with son's acceptance chances last year. Others have had mixed results.

WVU is a good option for DMV kids with this profile. I would also look at VCU (they have a summer bridge program for kids that meet certain criteria).
