I'm in the private sector and would absolutely push back on long haul trips in COACH. I'm away from my family, doing a favor for work, it's a hardship that not many want to do, quite frankly.

Exactly. Nobody IS forcing me. I'm in private sector. I'm cheering for the "good feds" and saying that we need to pay business class for them if we want them to do these long haul flights and retain the good people. I would like to have talent running the government.

Few hour layover to visit Germany vs a direct flight sure is certainly a first world, top 10% person problem.

I just traveled domestically but sat next to a fed who had a connection and then was heading to Germany. His connection was 6 hours. He could have flown direct but it was a more expensive flight and he said he’s required to book the cheapest regardless of route / length. I’m glad my agency policy allows for a more expensive flight if there are costs (like overtime) that offset the cheaper flight.

Generally speaking yes, you must use a US carrier. BUT code shares are OK and there is an exception process if the US / contract carrier ticket is much longer or more expensive than the contract/US carrier.

Leisure travel should br your own choice per your budget.

Bottom line, international laws should make sure that long haul flights are comfortable for people who are going for work.

Not many people do. Most assume that feds do nothing and what is required , can be done on zoom. Ignorance helps them criticize government.

I’ve sat in coach for many 14+ hour flights.

I don't know the rules for Australia, but I traveled to a conference in Japan this year as a non-fed and was on the same flight with my fed counterparts. They were in economy.

A friend in a global tech company traveled to 45 countries through work and many countries multiple times. That's lot of site seeing even though it was all economy. These are rare opportunities for people who want to see the world.
