Who is carter woodson? And what is his connection to Virginia?
I always thought Lewis was a bad choice for Lee as he was not from Virginia. If they were going to name it after a prominent civil rights figure, fcps should have named it after the Loving family, historically significant Virginia civil rights leaders in a way that directly impacted many current fcps families.

Anonymous wrote:They already have a majority to rename the school: Megan McLaughlin, Abrar Omeish, Rachna Sizemore Heizer, Karen Keys Gamarra, Karl Frisch, Ricardy Anderson, Laura Jane Cohen
Rationale:
"This topic specifically relates to our countywide One Fairfax Policy, School Naming Policy 8170.7, and Strategic Plan Goal 2: Safe, Supported, Included, and Empowered. 2. Objective of the topic/conversation: To have the School Board initiate its School Renaming Process for W.T. Woodson High School, with a completion date prior to December 2023.
In reviewing the School Board's calendar, the optimal timing to initiate this 2-month renaming process is Sept 14th-Nov 9th, 2023.
It should be noted that the School Name Policy 8170.7 states that: “the School Board shall make every effort to respect the preference of the community; however, final decisions on the naming of school facilities…shall rest entirely with the School Board.”
In this spirit, we as co-sponsors support the advocacy of current students and community members to initiate the name change process and to consider renaming it in honor of Carter G. Woodson. To date, there are a number of schools, public buildings, and parks across the country that are named in honor of Dr. Carter G. Woodson, including UVA’s Carter G. Woodson Institute for African-American and African Studies."

If I had a kid at Woodson, I'd be so annoyed. I just bought all the uniforms and gear for my kids - sports, PE, band, etc. I would not be buying anything new for my kids. And I guess the neighborhood will have to paint over all those Ws on the streets?
This is all just so damn stupid. It's a waste of time and resources when the school board could be worried about bigger things like - I dunno - education.
I have kids and woodson and want a name change. I will buy new uniforms and a magnet for my car.
That's great if you want to do it on your dime. But you no doubt don't plan to pay for:
Uniforms - every WTW sport team
Band and other uniforms
Gym floors and athletic fields
Signage
Stationery
Banners at other schools in the Patriot District
FCPS external and internal web sites
Other IT-related costs
If there were any evidence that FCPS named this school after Woodson because he held segregationist views, that might point in a different direction. But since there isn't, asking taxpayers to foot a large bill because you've decided decades later he should be cancelled is a bit much.
The "because" you note is irrelevant as it was part of his views and, as superintendent, relevant.
As for the other things you note, a) other schools did it seamlessly and b) those things are just plainly not as important. Full stop.

Definitely need a name change.
This paper should be required reading for all students - maybe as part of a history or writing or speech class. It is likely these students will face racist opinions or secrecy unwritten policies or practices like this. Our schools should teach children how to properly respond to these racist opinions and secret practices. I see many racist responses on this thread…
