I was responding directly to the posters saying there are not awards of this kind in elementary school. That's appropriate.
That has nothing to do with my insecurity. Which I do need to work on!

The harping on things that one is not familiar with and completely ignoring the actual concern posed and vilifying a stranger for admitting something positive about their child... it's just the worst of the internet. Luckily, the sweet and kind hearted also showed up in force and I thank them.


You don’t have a concern though. You are basically posted to be validated your kid is smart.

Yup. DP here. At our DCUm approved HS, in the written graduation program, it can not state who was given honors, presumably because parents complained.

OP, what are these other parents actually doing/saying that makes you believe that they are surprised?

I have never seen any information from school about who the “top” students are in ES, except when kids gossip about test scores or a teacher shares information with a kid’s own parent.

My kids get/got elementary academic awards and I don't really know or care which other parents are/were surprised by it. Other parents surprise or lack thereof does not affect my kids' performance in school. You have to understand that school awards are sometimes given for performance and sometimes given as motivation to kids who aren't performing as well as the top of the class, so don't get too smug or butthurt by awards or lack thereof.

I can’t imagine how you would know people are surprised your kid is smart, OP. Do they actually gasp when her name is called? So they really make comments like “I’m surprised Darla won that award, I thought Larla had it for sure!”?

That happened to me in high school after the PSAT. I was one of the generally smart kids, but more middle of the pack. I ended up with the third highest score in our class on the psat. Some parents were surprised, and I know one set of parents were pissed their son didn’t do as well. He was shipped off to sat prep, before it was really common.

No racial component, but I was the child of immigrants and neither of my parents went to high school. My friend’s dad was a doctor and his parents had high expectations. Getting beaten by the blue-collar kid didn’t go over well.
