Acceptable as a name if it’s after a James, but I’d still go with James because it’s a name I particularly like.

I think it's mainstream enough to not scream redneck like it did fifteen years ago, but there's still a redneck/aspirational vibe to it. If you're aiming for WASPy surname there are better names; if you're aiming for country there are better names; if you're aiming for James there's James.

OP, you will be the only one still calling him "Jameson". That's what moms do.

Names shorten with age, people tend to use the shorter-form, easiest version of their name because it's easier. He'll be Jim. Easier to say, easier to spell.


I know several Jamesons and none of them are called Jim.

It’s not a name I would choose, but there are way worse names!
