So don’t let your kid apply. No one will miss them. I was up there earlier this year and it’s fine - I just decided against walking across the Green at midnight. Everything has locked gates now and you need a keycard. Everyone needs street smarts, but I despair given the number of posts on FB and NextDoor with everyone complaining that their cars were rifled through while admitting they had left them unlocked.

If you look at the # by per capita, the order is a bit different, but most of the same colleges are on there.

This definitely gives me pause about what colleges DD should apply to.

I was initially surprised to see UF on the list, but clicking the link I see this is crimes on campus. UF’s campus is huge, with lots of wooded/natural areas that are often isolated. There are signs all over campus about not using certain paths after dark (this is going back at least 30 years). Most (all?) of the fraternity houses are on campus.

I’m not saying crime doesn’t happen, because clearly it does, but I wonder how many of these crimes are in populated areas during the school day, vs someone walking the trails around lake Alice after dark.

This leaflet was issued by the union representing the Yale Police, i.e., the private police force with jurisdiction over the campus which is currently negotiating a new contract with the University.

The criticisms/fears-mongering in the leaflet are all about off-campus New Haven, which is policed by the NHPD. New Haven is 1000% safer than it was at any point since the 1980s, with the possibility of a slight uptick in certain categories over the last 1-2 years—a national trend.

This is about ginning up parents and alumni to pressure Yale into giving more funding to campus Police, so they protect Rory Gilmore from all the Black heroin addicts and MS-13s hanging out at Sally’s. Please.

For undergrad, I’d pick Yale and Princeton any day over Harvard regardless of major. Have heard from enough Harvard College alums how much they have hated it. Can’t speak about Stanford.

Agreed. Harvard is the biggest brand and nobody questions that, but they don’t prioritize the undergraduate learning experience. There are plenty of great schools to do. Save Harvard for graduate.

No one that matters in the real world would ever bash these schools. Only anonymous trolls on this website would say such things. Everyone would include Yale among the most elite and uber prestigious universities in the world. Period. No relative rankings would change this perception. The same goes with Columbia. Silly season is upon us.

If HYPSM is now just HPSM, be a self-inflicted wound by Yale.

Recall seeing a video of Yale students screaming at a professor on campus for not being enough of an “ally” (his wife had the temerity to suggest Yale undergraduates should be trusted when it came to picking out their own Halloween costumes, and he defended her) and thinking it had jumped the shark.

It and Brown seem to be the Ivy equivalents of Oberlin now. Nothing wrong with that, if that’s the niche they want, but perhaps not compatible with being a top 5 or maybe even top 10 school.

I don't find these stats useful for selecting schools for two reasons:

1) These stats are dependent on schools reporting their data, and some schools are more honest than others. Some schools encourage reporting and provide better support for students who report.

2) The most reported crime for all school is rape, and the sad fact is that rape happens at every school. There are no "safe" schools.

… No? It’s a great school so there’s nothing wrong with people liking it and sharing their fond feelings for the place. I’m one of the people more in the camp HPSM > the rest but it’s silly to get annoyed by anyone gushing over Yale.

Me too, don’t get the Yale hate. We visited when my kid was looking at colleges and we both loved it. I truly felt a sense of community and it felt like a very special place.

Unfortunately, my kid didn’t get in but I wouldn’t bash the place.
