We did a 10 hour drive, that became closer to 12 hours because of a toilet-training toddler and a nursing baby, and survived. OP, change your frame of mind and instead of making it into an ordeal before you leave, you just say we're doing this, will prepare as best we can, and will deal with whatever happens.

DH should man up and tell his parents you will make the drive once each year, and if they want more frequent visits, they'll make the drive to you.

It’s true that I don’t enjoy two-day drives if I know I’m going to turn around a few days later and do it all over again. So I would agree that an 8-hour drive is way to long for a long weekend.

OP said it is not an 8-hour drive, it is a 5-hour drive. The reason why it is 8 hours, apparently, is she and DH are known to put their child who has special needs in charge of his own packing, and do not bother to check that his—and I quote—“life-saving medical device” is packed. She also says they have to stop several times to stop their children’s nonstop screaming.

A medical SN child that has to pack their own devices!! WTF?!?!

Right? The child forgot their life saving device. Not the parents, naturally.

And the children are SCREAMING in the Volvo. Shrieking for 8 hours, nonstop.

So nobody else has had a baby or toddler who went through a phase of inconsolable screaming on long drives and you had to stop for an hour just to calm them down enough to get back in the road? Apparently not, if you can't understand how a 5 hour drive can take 8.

The good thing is the phase doesn't last forever, but I get where OP is coming from!
