A little bit. A name with an L for a kid with a speech problem and a more feminine name for a kid who prefers a less feminine name (and in fact has changed their name, not officially, but goes by a different name 100 percent of the time).

I don't think those issues were foreseeable, though. No regrets.

I know a kid in my neighborhood named Craven. I guess it sounds kind of cool, like Raven, and that’s what the parents were going for, but the dictionary definition of the word “craven” is, essentially, “cowardly”.

No, but my child has now decided to go by their middle name, and I don’t understand why they are unnecessarily creating this annoyance in their life. Both DH and I go by our middle names, through no decision of our own (our parents did this to us) and know first hand what a PIA it is. But whatever, DC will either grow tired of it or just learn to deal.

As an aside, they don’t hate their first name, they just want to use their more unique, “edgier” middle name.

We have friends who named their baby girl a name that is a top 10 baby name right now EXCEPT they switched one letter in the name to make it different and original. I don’t want to say what the name is in case they are on this forum. It is such a hideous name, it’s also an English adjective/comparative word, think like Softer or Louder.

Yeah I know a Siri and an Alexa (same frosh dorm hall!) and they used to like their names.

No, unfortunately it totally can. I was at a kids sporting event and half the crowd was cheering on Axel by name and the other half was looking horrified at what it sounded like people were yelling.

My name is Kayleigh - often used as an example of kr8tyv spelling, but it's just the names Kay and Leigh combined. Often misspelled and/confused with similar names - Hailey, Kelsey, Kaitlyn etc. Didn't love when it was trending on twitter during the Trump admin either.

Its better to pick an easy, generic, mainstream name or you give racists and bullies an excuse to show their colors. It can even effect college and job applications.

Teachers especially need to get it together when it comes to names. I teach high school, and recently wrote down a kids name in front of her - common enough name, unique spelling. Her face absolutely lit up "you spelled it right!! Teachers NEVER spell it right!" It's not that hard to learn a name and spell it correctly. I also always ask if I'm pronouncing it right, and write it down phonetically until I remember it correctly. Basic human respect.

I feel horrible for all of the Alexas in the world. I think you generally cannot predict which names might give you trouble 10 years later.

But both of my kids have names that are not in the top 100 but are easy to say and spell and people usually know one or two of them in their lives so its not a surprise name but also not at all common. And I love it and would reccomend it to anyone considering names. It is a relief to not have to worry that teachers, doctors, camp counselors, random paperwork people will get my kids names wrong, but its also nice being the only one in their class with that name. Neither of my kids have ever shared a name with a classmate (though I think both might have had a kid in another grade with the same name). I feel bad for Thomas B., Thomas J., and Thomas S. all in the same 3rd grade class.
