So true. Spoilt brats who think everything is up for discussion and changing to their personal preferences

I have taught in both - and they are different issues, as someone mentioned above.

Private - they might be "respectful" not talking while you're teaching. Not blatantly telling you no when you ask them to do something. But there are a few that feel entitled and that as a teacher you are lower class than them and treat you as such. Quote from a former student "Poor you, you can't get the newest Iphone because you don't have a good job."

Public - More behavior based issues.

Although - after virtual learning I have found, across the board, a lot of students are much more disrespectful in their tone and overall interactions with all adults. I think it comes down to being with only their parents at home and their backtalking/disrespectful tone (as most teenagers do at some point) And not realizing that is not appropriate in other situations with other adults. (Arguing little things, always trying to negotiate etc.)

sadly, but expected, this thread has turned into a contentious debate. We all read about teachers being assaulted in public schools and verbally abused as well. This does not happen in private without consequence . Are kids rude in private schools? Yes. But unlike public - where anything goes - you get tossed out - lots of kids on waitlists with better character. Public schools are a dumpster and you get a mixed bag of kids. Fact.

Was thinking of subbing at private schools and wondering if the respect and behavior is better toward teachers. I realize each school is a little different but to generalize a little, will I have an easier time dealing with kids in private schools?

The boys are in fear at my son’s all boy school that they will not be invited back if they are disrespectful to their teachers.

I think it’s a toss-up, having worked in both. But the parents are definitely more respectful in public. I am a middle aged professional and did not enjoy being treated like the help.

I’ve taught in both and the students were much more respectful in private. They learned early on what would be allowed and what wouldn’t. There were actual consequences for disrespect.

Yes, but private school Teachers are more respectful towards the students as well. You have to be nice to them or they will complain about you to their mom on the governing board and you will be out.

Some people confuse this for respect.

My mom worked in private first, then public in middle school. She was always dealing with classroom management and never said public was worse. This was in a bloated school district too.
