There's only 3 of us so 3 bedrooms would be fine, but I work from home so I need a home office and I'd love to have a real home gym. It would be great to have a 1500 sq ft main house, and a completely separate building with space for a gym, office and another bath. I'd only really heat and cool that when I'm using it.
Where can I build this?

3,000-3,500 sq feet
And that's for everything, not these posters who are saying that number plus a finished basement and screened porches etc.
It's also worth noting how important design/layout is. No one wants 4,000 sq feet of open concept. But a house with multiple rooms allows for much more flexibility over the years.

Hehe. Never understood why Americans think it’s ok to drive solo in mega Suburban type SUVs but residing in relatively large homes represents a wasteful mindset.

We have a 2200 sqft beach house that feels huge for our family of 4. Probably 3000 sqft with my husband's desire for storage space.
