Schools are more polluted than the majority of homes. They need to keep doors open to an influx of students. The gyms get really hot, and teachers open those windows. Some teachers, like my kid's teacher, ignore the air quality alerts and bring their students outside (my kid had to rehearse their play outside today, despite the children's protests!).
I agree that schools should close on Code Red days. They can stay open on Code Orange days.
The reason I say this is that Code Red days will become a lot more prevalent with global warming. Snow days will decrease. It's just the new risk we need to adjust to, and protect our children from. The only way we can have school on Code Red days is if we equip public schools with reliable ventilation and air filters, and procedures for not keeping doors/windows wide open for hours, which for the moment is not happening, even in the wealthiest school districts.
If they close, who will watch the kids. Parents had a fit over virtual school....
And, those of us in virtual, why should we not get educational days because you are having a tantrum over air quality. Put a mask on and you'll be fine.
1. I am not having a tantrum. I am explaining my point of view, rude person.
2. I did put on a mask while outside today, and will do so again tomorrow, and for every Code Red day. However this is not about me, or my kids (who happen to have asthma, and who used their inhalers and wore their masks at school, today). It's about the health of the population as a whole.
3. I know I'm going against the grain, because there is a certain group that needs repeated education when it comes to health matters and who reflexively abuses others when it comes to new ideas (God forbid we'd want to improve on what we had in the 70s! Uphill both ways is how we want to keep it!). But one day, if you live long enough to live through more global warming events, you will come to see my point of view. We now need to think about air pollution in a much more careful way than before. It's easy to do, and not scary.
