Go on Poshmark and search by fabric: cotton, linen, hemp, silk, etc.

Eileen Fisher, Athleta, Lafayette 151, and Garnet Hill are some brands I like.

I agree with thrift stores but there is a lot of poor quality clothing so you need to have time and patience, go often.
I think Vince and Theory are generally good quality and can be affordable at TJ Maxx. In particular cashmere sweaters, silk tops, wool trousers by these brands.

I have some Mossimo t shirts from Target that must be 10+ years old and look new. I initially bought them in several colors because the fit was so good. I miss that brand.

I'm always pleasantly surprised at the quality of JCrew Factory items, especially their casual jackets.

Believe it or not, things from the Free Assembly clothing line at Walmart are generally really well made. And mostly tasteful.

I was purging some boxed items in my house, and dug up a business wear dress I had purchased from Casual Corner (if you remember that store, it's not upper end) when I first started working in the late 90s.

Man, that dress was wonderfully sewn, bust darts in the proper place, fully lined, with a zipper that just disappeared when zipped up. I'm thinking that today, you couldn't find a dress like that for less than $300.



Ahhh, Casual Corner! I remember its exact location in my hometown mall! Great little starter wardrobe!

Uniqlo makes thermal underwear, hoodies, sweats etc. under their heattech line that holds up really well and definitely keeps you warm without much bulk.

These “American brands” aren’t made in the US. Southeast Asia or South America, usually. If you want made in the USA, you’ll pay for it.

Eddie Bauer, occasionally I find a winner at target (perfect fabric and cut) and on that rare occasion I don't think twice about buying the same item twice for a backup.

Old Navy occasionally sells dresses and shirts made with Supima cotton. If you can find them, buy them all. I have some pieces from seven years ago that are still in great shape.

Merino wool sweaters from Uniqlo. They wear really well and last forever.

Fabric matters!

Yes, it's the stuff from the past that is well made. The thrift shop suggestion is good except some of those clothes looked dated, and I say that even as a woman who does NOT follow trends. Some of my favorite things were thrifted. You have to find the needle in the haystack.
