OP, sounds like your kid has an involved father who spent time with the kid and they have a nice memory of this. Let it go. Hairstyles are just hideous these days anyway.

To give you context: my MIL low-key disappeared in the house with my 4 year old son a few years back and when he reappeared she had 'trimmed his bangs'.... he had a shaggy big mop previously and now had a Little Lord Fauntleroy. Kid you not. My DH's eyes bulged and he started deep breathing so I knew I didn't even need to address it. We laugh about it now but it was pretty embarrassing being seen with him- I ended up trimming the rest within a couple days and advising her that 'bangs are a ratio kind of thing' as even she had realized at that point that she had given him a victorian princess haircut.

My DH once buzzed our kid’s hair so short he looked like a cancer patient. It was mortifying and honestly an affront to real cancer patients.

LOL NP but my husband took my 3yo for a hair cut a few weeks before he was ring bearer in his aunt’s wedding. 3yo has this thick, wavy hair, and DH basically got him a Marine cut. I was so mad! It made him look much older. Luckily it grew in somewhat by the wedding.
