These threads make me so angry. MCPS should either offer Algebra 1 to no one or should have a publicized, communicated and fair process for students at any/every school to qualify to take this path if it is believed that there are 6th graders for whom this path is appropriate. Like, they all need to take a placement test. Or they all need X score on the MAP. This is not a hard concept, and parents get upset because they don’t have a good placement process County-wide for any 6th graders as it relates to math. So it all feels shady and unfair.

AP Trig doesn't exist. AP Precalc is new next year, and it's for low-level students not advanced students who take honors Precalculus.
A student in the hyper advanced track at a non magnet school can take: for example:

9: Precalc
10: AP Calc BC
11: AP Stats
12: Multivariable calculus in school or dual enrollment at Montgomery College.

Even if they have to pad with a filler class at a bad school that won't offer a 4th advanced math class, they can coast through that filler class in *lhigh school so they can work more in classes that are tougher for them. These kids are smart enough to hate Maryland for its stupid laws and hate MCPS for not offering good classes, not hate math that they've enjoyed their whole life.

Then your kid is very special. The magnet coordinator and the previous one have been very clear that no one does algebra in 6th grade if they haven’t done AIM in 5th and even then they strongly discourages it.

You don't realize you're talking to parents who have older kids who thrived in advanced math classes and are here because they also have younger kids, and/or parents who are mathematicians or use a lot of math in their careers, Mrs Mom and Teacher. These nomikers don't do anything to make you more credible. Do you not understand that some kids are BORED STIFF in "regular" math classes? My child who took Algebra 1 in 6th grade said it was the only class where she learned a little bit of new stuff that year. She hated school because it was so dull. She can't wait to get on to more challenging material, and I have no doubt she's ready for it, with a mathematician parent.

Mom and teacher here: best advice I was ever given was to not push my kids too far ahead in math. Here’s the problem: they have to take 4 years of math in high school regardless of which classes they’re in. This means that kids who soared ahead in middle school end up taking awful classes like AP trig in high school. And they end up hating math. Let your smart kid coast a little. Especially because some of these kids struggle in some or the writing heavy classes.

At 24:46 Sarah Manchester starts explaining that some students take Alg in 6th, and she teaches Alg 2 in 8th this year. She makes a point to not state the exact criteria. Then she gushes over how great the Algebra 2 class is, which I imagine makes a lot of people salty, especially since the class is probably small size with more attention to each student.

Near the end (~58minutes?) in the Q&A she emphasizes that once they get to middle school students are not allowed to skip any (more) courses, regardless of ability or how much outside enrichment they do.

When mine was in 5th, they also scored in the 270s. Our home school doesn't offer this as an option. Sure, they could've easily handled Algebra, but it gave them more time to absorb the material. By the end of the 6th, they were scoring in the 290s, so they seemed to be doing fine. They're headed to Blair SMCS and will probably be in the same class with kids a year ahead of them. In the end, it made no difference.

It's done to keep the kids at the home school vs. leaving for private or other situations.

Just so it’s clear the above is NOT the reason people try to prevent this. The real reasons are that AlgII and above require more abstract thing and more application of skills. Allowing kids to mature helps with this. Also, Maryland requires 4yrs of math in HS. Students taking Alg1 in 6th will most likely have to go to the HS in 8th for Alg2. A class that typically has a range of 9th-11th graders. Some of ya’ll nor your kids are prepared for what goes on in HS. Further, the student will then be taking Calculus in 10th grade. So the question becomes what are they going to take Jr/Sr year especially if they aren’t planning to major in something that requires really advance math.
